Sporting excellent build quality, the device is let down by an uninspiring camera, weak processor and high price tag

Rating:
3.4
Typical Price:
Rs.16,599.00
Pros:
Very Good Build Quality,Camera Autofocus Issues, Good Quality Accessories & Packaging, Quiet Loudspeaker, Planned Android v4.4 KitKat Update
Cons:
Ugly Icons, Weak Processor For A Full HD Screen
Verdict:
The Canvas Turbo is the best device from Micromax ever. It comes with great metal build and full HD screen with very good viewing angles. But turns out that Micromax has still not learnt to make devices with good all-round performance. The processing performance, camera quality and battery life fail to impress. consumers will be better off buying either the Gionee Elife E7 Mini which comes with an octa-core processor or Sony Xperia C which comes with insanely long battery life.
Canvas Turbo is Micromax’s first device that features premium design and build, thanks to the use of Aluminium body. It’s not a unibody design though, unlike HTC One but one shouldn’t expect it at this price. Even though it’s not a unibody design, the back cover is non-removable. There are two SIM card trays side-by-side which can be opened with supplied SIM card removal tool.
The overall design in the front looks very Samsung-ish while the back slightly resembles to the HTC One and the iPhone 5S. It has tough build quality yet, feels nice in the hand. A slight complain however is with the strip surrounding the front of the device which isn’t in the same surface level as the screen. It is also a bit sharp and might annoy users during longer calls.
Opposed to a general trend, the Micro USB port is on the top of the device while the auxiliary headphone jack is at the bottom. Also, Micromax, similar to many Android smartphone brands, is still resorting to use capacitive touch buttons for back, menu and home against Google’s guidelines. These keys are neither properly coloured nor the backlight in them stays as long as the screen is active. This makes it hard to spot and identify those keys.
Display
The device has a 5 inch IPS LCD panel with full HD 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution. As per multi-touch test, it supports 10 fingers at once. The brightness is good and viewing angles are great for a device priced below INR 20,000. Screen sharpness is great, thanks to 441 ppi but the difference between a 720p screen and a 1080p screen isn’t even noticeable.
May be Micromax should’ve invested in more important things than in an aspect where even it’s previous flagship device was already good enough. The multitouch capacitive screen panel can recognise maximum of 10 fingers at once.
Performance
A 1.5GHz MediaTek MT6589T chipset takes cares of all the processing needs in the Canvas Turbo, which is the same chipset that powers the Gionee Elife E6. This SoC is paired with PowerVR SGX544 GPU (357 MHz) and 2GB of LP-DDR2 RAM.
When it comes to actual performance, it not smooth. One can notice stutters in UI animations. This may be because of the PowerVR SGX544 GPU (11.4 GFLOPS), which finds it hard to cope up and push pixels to full HD resolution screen. Generally, MT6589 and MT6589T is suitable only for HD 720p screens.
Micromax, like other Indian smartphone brands are known for not optimising Android for specific hardware, which might be partly responsible for the stutters. Only casual games like Angry Birds and Subway Surfers offer smooth playback. One shouldn’t expect to enjoy high quality graphic games on the Canvas Turbo, instead they should opt for smartphones with HD resolutions.
Call quality is decent but the loudspeaker is quiet and it often gets muffled as it is located at the back of the device. Wi-Fi and cellular signal strength were generally good during the time of the review and no serious death-grip issue were noticed. Bluetooth transfer speeds were averagely around 130-140 Kb/s (maximum of 190 Kb/s) when paired with a Bluetooth v4.0 device.
